Fragment: The Arab-Islamic conception of the known world was based on three different visions. One was linear, according to climates, and belonged both to the Greek-Ptolemaic tradition and to the Hindu one; one was radial, drawn perhaps from the Iranian vision whose centre was Persia; and the third one was “quartered” as in heraldry. The three conceptions were already considered imperfect by the Arab authors themselves, who often even used them contemporaneously. Their first modification of approach, which was to place Islam and its territories at the centre, was followed by more technical ones. An example would be the first Arab reformulation of Ptolemy’s work, in which al-Kharazmi (9th century) rectified some data also in the section dedicated to Europe.
