Fragment: “what was the meaning of “nation” in the Middle Ages in Europe? Can the term “nation” be linked to the so-called process of integration of larger groups that built up the medieval regna? Can we detect the beginning of the process of nationbuilding already in the post-Carolingian medieval times and even in Germany? Can we prove the existence of a certain German “identity” in the Middle Ages? First of all we have to mention a thesis which is supported by many historians: they believe that Germany was a “delayed or late nation” in comparison to other nations in Europe, especially France, often considered the ideal type of a medieval “nation-state”. Both were successors of the Carolingian Empire but their further development was quite different. We have to keep this thesis in mind while discussing the problem of nation-building in Germany. Generally, we have to admit that the idea of the German Empire in the Middle Ages as a predecessor of the German Empire of the 19th century is a construction made by historians of that latter century to legitimise the building-up of the “second empire of 1871”. We also have to distinguish carefully between “nationalism” and “national consciousness”.
