Abstract: State building in early modern Europe was an important aspect of identity formation. In Ireland the control of the means of identity formation was crucially important in the early 17th century as a number of different political and religious options struggled for acceptance in a strife-torn country. The authors and texts presented in this chapter represent one of the traditions seeking acceptance. The chapter looks at four key aspects of their thought: rewriting of history, critique of existing institutions, religious identity and the rejection of political and religious alternatives. These are recurrent themes in contemporary texts and illustrate the depth of the political and religious identity crisis encountered by early-modern Europeans.
