Discovery of 300-million-year-old fossils rewrites origins of Homo sapiens
The discovery of ancient remains of Stone Age humans in Morocco has pushed back the date of the origin of our species by 100,000 years.
An international team of scientists unearthed teeth, bones and skulls belonging to three Homo sapiens adults, a teenager and a child among animal bones and stone tools.
Dating of the tools indicates the individuals were between 281,000 and 349,000 years old, the scientists report in two papers published in Nature today.
The discovery, by a team led by paleoanthropologist Jean-Jacques Hublin of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, is a major boost to the scarce fossil record for early Homo sapiens.
More importantly, when and where the group were living will also mean some editing of the story of how modern-day humans emerged.
Prior to this discovery, the oldest known Homo sapiens fossils were 195,000-year-old remains found at Omo Kibish in Ethiopia.
"We used to think that there was a cradle of mankind 200,000 years ago in east Africa, but our new data reveal that Homo sapiens spread across the entire African continent around 300,000 years ago," Professor Hubin said.
"Long before the out-of-Africa dispersal of Homo sapiens there was dispersal within Africa."
Pre-eminent Australian bioanthropologist Colin Groves of the Australian National University said the discovery was the strongest evidence yet Homo sapiens were evolving across the African continent at the same time Neanderthals were emerging in Europe.
"What it means is that as Homo sapiens began to emerge from its ancestral species, it spread pretty rapidly over the whole of Africa," said Professor Groves, who was not involved in the discovery.

Piecing together evolution of human brain A team led by Professor Hubin and Abdelouahed Ben-Ncer of the National Institute for Archaeology and Heritage in Morocco unearthed the remains at Jebel Irhoud, 100 kilometres west of Marrakesh.
The site has been long-known as a source of human fossils, but the age of earlier discoveries at the site has been unclear.
Analysis of the skulls using micro CT scanning and 3D modelling by Professor Hubin and colleagues indicated the early humans would have appeared very similar to modern humans from the front, with fine-featured faces almost identical to our own.
From the back, however, it would have been a different story. The group's skulls were elongated and angular, more reminiscent of the ancestral species Homo heidelbergensis, from which both Homo sapiens and Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis) began evolving approximately 500,000 years ago.
Professor Groves said the structure of skulls are very similar to Homo sapiens skulls found at Omo Kibish and Herto, another site in Ethiopia.
He said the findings indicated that while our modern facial structures have stayed the same, our brain case had not yet formed 300,000 years ago.
While little is known yet about how the group lived, the bones of gazelles, wildebeest and other large mammals at the site suggest these early humans were big game hunters.
And the flint tools found with the fossils were made using a primitive technique known as Lavallois, which involved roughly shaping a stone before splitting it to create a blade of a desired shape.
"It means they were no slouches intellectually," Professor Groves said.
The mandible Irhoud 11 is the first, almost complete adult mandible discovered at the site of Jebel Irhoud.© Provided by ABC News The mandible Irhoud 11 is the first, almost complete adult mandible discovered at the site of Jebel Irhoud. How do we know how old the fossils are? Critical to the discovery is the use of sophisticated techniques used to date the stone tools and reanalyse another jaw bone that was originally discovered in 1960.
Many of the tools at the site had been subjected to heat, which enabled the team to date the amount of radiation they contained using a technique known as thermoluminescence dating.
Australian geochronologist Rainer Grün has been working with Professor Hublin for 20 years on the Jebel Irhoud fossils.
A world leader in the non-destructive dating of human remains, Professor Grün used a new type of laser to measure the environmental radiation absorbed by a fossilised tooth enamel less than a fifth of a millimetre in diameter.
This technique, known as electron spin resonance, indicated the tooth was up to 318,000 years old — nearly twice the age it had been previously estimated — and matched the date of the stone tools.
"That is the culmination of 20 years' work — but I was also very lucky," said Professor Grün, who is now the director of Australian Research Centre of Human Evolution based at Griffith University.
