The compilation of the evidence in the ancient source and the archaeological data made B.A. Litvinskij suggest that Ferghana was connected with particular group of Hephthalites – the "Red Chiones". He thought that the Chiones lived in the mountainous regions of eastern Central Asia, namely in the fore-mountains of Ferghana [Litvinskij, 1976. pp. 55-56].
When describing the possession of Nin’juan the Tanshu chronicle says that it is "in fact a possession of Bokhan’na, otherwise known as Bokhan’. At the time of the Juan Vej dynasty it was called Polona". And further: "The ruler resided in the town of Sigjan’m on the north side of the river Chzhen’chzhu. There are six large and around 100 small towns. The inhabitants live till old age. The succession of the rulers has not been broken since the time of the dynasties of Juan Vej (386-535 AD) and Czin’ (265-420 AD)" [Ibid. p. 319].

George Vernadsky (1888–1973) wiązał ją z tocharskim słowem „ant”, „równina” (Vernadsky, 1959, s. 82); Tuomo Pekkanen (1934-) – z awest. anda- / staroind. andhá, „ciemny” (Pekkanen, 1968, s. 130–131); Jaroslav Rudnyćkyj (1910–1995) (Rudnyćkyj, 1962,
s. 27) ze staroind. anta-: „koniec”, „skraj”, pace Олег Н. Трубачев (1930–2002) (Трубачев, 1977, s. 24–25).".

Słowiańskie dal też by do tego pasowało.

Kronika Weilue (w opr. John.E. Hill) III wiek n.e.. Antsai i Yancai były używane zamiennie:
Rozdział 25. :"Then there is the kingdom of Liu (between Kangju and Yancai?),1 the kingdom of Yan (to the north of Yancai),2 and the kingdom of Yancai (between the Black and Caspian Seas),3 which is also called Alan.4 They all have the same way of life as those of Kangju.

To the west, they border Da Qin (Roman territory), to the southeast they border Kangju (Tashkent plus the Chu, Talas, and middle Jaxartes basins).

These kingdoms have large numbers of their famous sables.5 They raise cattle and move about in search of water and fodder. They are close to a big marsh (to the northeast and north of the Aral Sea).6 Previously they were vassals of Kangju (Tashkent plus the Chu, Talas, and middle Jaxartes basins). Now they are no longer vassals."

QUOTE
. Poluona 破洛那, another name of Ferghana. This name appears in the “Bei-shi” Ch. 97.
破: modern pronunciation: pò; Han era: phājh; Wei and Tang eras: phā; meaning: to break; 洛: modern pronunciation: luò, in the Han, In the Wei and Tang ages: eras: rhāk; meaning: the name of the Lohe river (in Henan); 那: modern pronunciation: nă, in the Han, Wei and Tang eras:
n(h)ān; meaning: this, he. Reconstruction: “phā-rhāk-n(h)ān”, or Parkana. The etymology of the name can be explained with the Tocharian park - high and kaniya - country, “parkaniya” - high country. As analogues of the Tocharian name, we can indicate the Scandinavian Fiorgyn, the Old High German Fergunna - mountain land, the Gothic fairguni - Mountain. (AM-TX,p.186), (SP- ITMCh, p. 9) Ferghana Valley itself is a mountain valley.
